About Organic Food
VeggieGlobal &
Looking-Glass campaigned in the early 90's (via other UK publications) to raise
mainstream awareness about organic foods. We were giving sound reasons
to buy organic as a preference and whenever possible - and continue to
do so elsewhere around these sites. Fortunately the public began to pick
up on the message, and trendy as it may be, organic produce has now become
widely available. You can now get organic fruit and vegetables delivered
to your door.
Since the recent surge in organic interests, all kinds of myths and hype
have emerged with the trend. Many
people are actually pretty clueless when it comes to determining the difference
between organic, vegetarian and most of all, food products that have actually
always been organic. Many manufacturers are jumping on the organic bandwagon
by promoting their products as "organic" - and upping the prices - even
though they may have always been manufactured using the same "organic"
ingredients! Organic wines are not necessarily suitable for vegetarians
- and lots of veggies get caught out by this. In this case "organic" only
means that the grapes used to make the wine are grown without the use
of chemical pesticides or chemical fertilizers. However, the clarifying
and fining agents used in the wine making process can contain various
animal derivatives including blood, gelatine, and isinglass - which comes
from the bladder of the sturgeon fish. Cheese that's made with organic
milk may well contain animal based rennet, so always check on this.
Organic
food has become an increasingly popular
choice for shoppers in many areas of the world
with some supermarkets now stocking
a higher percentage of produce grown locally by organically certified
gardeners, farmsteads and smallholders. In this way, country environments
can begin to reap the natural benefits of a pesticide free environment,
and consumers can enjoy healthy, wholesome products.
Choosing organic
fruit and vegetables not only ensures a healthy lifestyle, but it also
dramatically increases the quality of many environments around the world.
Footnote 1. NEVER
buy "organic" soy products from manufacturers which source their
soy beans from the Brazilian rain forest, where trees are felled to plant
illegal soy crops. Check the soy bean source by questioning the manufacturer.
