GGL #3
Here is a recent report by CIWF on a cruel and archaic
trade:
"... The EU Transport Directive
is totally failing to protect the one million plus British sheep
exported each year to continental abattoirs, both because its
treatment guidelines are routinely broken in France, Italy and
Greece and because its rules are far too weak."
CIWF's report reveals that:
- In 1999, over one million lambs
and sheep were exported from the UK for slaughter abroad, which
means this cruel trade had more than doubled in just 2 years.
Many of the animals are sent on appallingly long journeys to
Italy, Greece and Spain, where often they are killed in abattoirs
using cruel and illegal slaughter methods.
- Thousands of British sheep are
exported each year for outdoor ritual slaughter in France at
the Eid-el-Kabir festival.
- Over 100,000 horses and small
donkeys are exported each year from Eastern Europe - on journeys
that can last over 90 hours - for slaughter in the European
Union.
Here is a report
from the Looking-Glass Global News Archives:
THE CHINESE BEARS TORTURE ... the
agonising torture of Chinese bears continues. These creatures
are held captive throughout their whole 15 year life. The bears
are held down horizontally insde cages that are no bigger than
the animals themselves
They cannot move at all and are
left to soak in their own urine and excrement, which burns their
skin. Permanent tubes are inserted into the live animal to extract
internal fluids, which are used in traditional Chinese medicine.
Those above are just two factual
reports amongst thousands worldwide, exposing the appalling conditions
that animals have to endure, not only during their lives but also
on their final journey to the abattoir.
There are many more articles on these issues scattered around
VeggieGlobal and Looking-Glass all pointing to the same
obvious conclusion...
