Pet Abuse Linked to Child
Abuse and Domestic Violence
"Child
Abuse, Domestic Violence, and Animal Abuse: Linking the Circles
of Compassion for Prevention and Intervention"
(West Lafayette, Ind.: Purdue University Press, 1999. ISBN 1-55753-143-9)
The Latham Foundation
of Alameda, Calif., (www.latham.org) is proud to announce the publication
of a 498-page text designed to help people understand how cruelty
to animals is a sentinel warning that often presages acts of interpersonal
violence. The book describes the many links between animal control
and care officials, child protection officials, and domestic violence
prevention workers and helps them develop interdisciplinary collaborations
to break the cycles of family violence.
"Child Abuse, Domestic
Violence, and Animal Abuse: Linking the Circles of Compassion for
Prevention and Intervention" is already in its third printing and
is being used worldwide to help people understand the significance
of animal abuse in the continuum of family violence. Edited by Frank
Ascione, Ph.D., professor of psychology at Utah State University
and Phil Arkow, humane society official, and sponsored by the Latham
Foundation, the book is already a landmark resource and reference
text for researchers and field workers in all three disciplines.
Evidence is mounting
that animal abuse is frequently embedded in families scarred by
domestic violence and child maltreatment, and often predicts the
potential for other violent acts.
The book is a compilation
of 45 original essays by 51 noted authorities who argue compellingly
that violence prevention programs are enhanced by including animal
protection personnel and by recognizing animal maltreatment as a
human welfare issue.
Contributors include
many authorities from the animal protection fields, including Cindy
Adams, Phil Arkow, Frank Ascione, Mary Pat Boatfield, Jill De Grave,
Debbie Duel, Mitchell Fox, Mother Hildegard George, Michael Kaufmann,
Randy Lockwood, Patty Olson, Carol Rathmann, Sam Ross, Andrew Rowan,
Sgt. Sherry Schlueter, Gary Tiscornia, and 35 others. The perspectives
of law enforcement, legislative, child protection, domestic violence,
veterinary, and humane officials are included.
The book features original
research, strategic interventions, and dramatic tales from survivors
of family violence. Topics include: - the "battered pet syndrome";
- how animal abuse is a sentinel indicator of sociopathic behavior
and a means to control battered women and sexually abused children;
- the processes for building a cruelty case; - strategies to change
state laws; - and the role of veterinary medicine in preventing
family violence. Seven chapters describe animal-based interventions
that are helping to rehabilitate at-risk children. Four chapters
describe community anti-violence coalitions that include animal
protection personnel.

Animals
in Translation : Using the Mysteries of Autism to Decode Animal
Behavior (Paperback)
by
Temple Grandin, Catherine Johnson
A fascinating perspective
of what may - or may not - go on inside the minds of animals. There
is no doubt that animal senses transcend the world of humans, and
it could be argued that their intelligence is only incomparable
rather than less of that of humans.
Animals in Translation attempts to unravel animal consciousness
through scientific and psychological studies - but a measure of
instinctive human understanding is also taken into consideration.
